Synopsis and Discussion

Code ORANGE ozone concentrations are being observed across portions of the southern Triad and an Air Quality Alert remains in effect until 8 PM on Friday. Code ORANGE is Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups. Children, elderly, and people with any heart or lung disease (like asthma) should limit outdoor exertion. While the bulk of the wildfire smoke remains to our north, some has made it into the area and fine particle levels are in the mid to upper Code Yellow range. As flow turns southwesterly and moisture levels increase, storm chances will be reintroduced to the forecast over the next three days. Additionally, the winds will help to scour out the surface smoke that is in place today. This will lead to improving air quality this weekend with ozone hovering in the upper Code Green to lower Code Yellow ranges. It may take some time to clear out the smoke tomorrow and daily averages could still net out in the mid Code Yellow range. Lower Code Yellow particle pollution is anticipated for the latter half of the weekend. Unfortunately, the AQI forecast turns more complex on Monday as another backdoor front tries to make it into the area. Model guidance shows it stalling out near the VA border, like today. Given how far out it is, mid Code Yellow particle pollution concentrations are expected for now as there will almost certainly be some wildfire smoke to the north of the boundary. Fine tuning will be done over the next couple forecast cycles as more information becomes available and the details of the frontal boundary become clearer. (Greg Perrotte / perrotgt@forsyth.cc)
